South Asian Storytellers Scholarship

The South Asian Storytellers Scholarship was established by award-winning children’s book author, Rajani LaRocca. It provides funds to support a South Asian creator at the Highlights Foundation.

Rajani says:

When I was growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, I loved all kinds of books and all kinds of characters. But I never read a story with a protagonist like me—an Indian American—not in the U.S. and not in India.

It wasn’t until I was an adult with children of my own that I read such a book and realized what I’d been missing. It was life changing. It made me think that maybe someone might want to read my own stories.

Everyone deserves to see themselves in books. I hope this scholarship helps a storyteller unlock their creativity and bring the stories of their heart to life.

Rajani LaRocca was born in India, raised in Kentucky, and now lives in the Boston area, where she practices medicine and writes award-winning books for young people, including the 2022 Walter Award and Newbery Honor-winning middle grade novel in verse, Red, White, and Whole. She’s always been an omnivorous reader, and now she is an omnivorous writer of novels and picture books, fiction and nonfiction, prose and poetry. Learn more about her at www.RajaniLaRocca.com.
