Why This Workshop?
When was the last time you were asked to come away and play?
Well, this program is sending an invitation to you for 4-days of just that. Come join Denise Fleming, Ashley Wolff and special guest Sara Gomez Woolley to get messy! To get creative! To get away and play!
The retreat is open to EVERYONE. No art experience is needed! We’ll provide all of the supplies. We’ll also talk about artists and share stories about our own stories.
Techniques and topics explored in our 2023 retreat include:
- Painting with gouache on black paper
- 3-D assemblages using driftwood and clay
- Acrylic painting on plexiglass
- Cartoon panels and play
- Painting with alcohol inks on metal
Past techniques explored at this type of retreat have included:
Feedback Expected
- None. This workshop is not about critique or feedback. It is a chance to play and explore art!
It’s a Great Fit If…
- You are a writer who has always wanted to try your hand at illustration techniques.
- You are an illustrator/artist looking for a retreat to play; not anchored to a work in progress.
- You could use some creative inspiration. There will be daily exercises designed to spark new ideas.
- You’d appreciate some retreat time. This course has plenty of built-in time to write, draw, hike, or rest–whatever you need.

Commitment Required for the Best Experience
As an in-person event at our Retreat Center, you’ll have a chance to step away from everyday life to experience the workshop. We try to build in breaks and independent time so you have space for your personal needs. While we encourage participation in all group events, we know that as an adult learner you can decide if you need more time to yourself. Please let someone from our staff or faculty know if you plan to step away from group activities.
The Highlights Foundation strives for a safe and inclusive environment. You will have access to our Community Standards prior to the workshop where we ask for your respectful engagement with fellow creatives, including our faculty and staff.
How It Impacts Kids
This workshop impacts your inner “kid” with plenty of time for play and creativity! Let this feed your future stories for all kids as you hold onto the inspiration.
